The Borneo 100 Miler turned into a HOT race, both in terms of the weather and the competition in the men's category.
The weather forecast for the long weekend of 3-5 June had predicted rain over the area of the race course set between the western flanks of Mt. Kinabalu and the West Coast of Sabah. Apart from distant thunder and a shower over the eastern loop of the course, the weather remained hot and dry until a short time after the cut-off time when the skies opened with tropical downpours - as if to taunt the participants.
The bald Bukit Bongol will likely be remembered by the majority of the 100 miler participants more for it's steep incline and heat than for it's beautiful views to both Mt. Kinabalu and the sea. By the look of participants reaching the trail end at the village of Kg. Bongol (the location of Aid Station 2), the organisers feared a high drop-out rate at an early stage of the race. We were, however, extremely pleased to see that the majority of runners showed the resilience and mental strength required to complete a 100 mile course, carried on and recovered to complete the race. The tap with cooling water at the entrance to Kg. Bongol and the stall set up by villagers with ice-cold drinks were "life-savers" for many.
Out of 144 participants starting the 100 miler course, 75% managed to complete within the cut-off time. This is significantly higher than the 60% completion rate for the inaugural Borneo 100 Miler in 2020. We congratulate all finishers - it was by no means an easy race! To those who had to retire from the race for various reasons, we are sure it has been a learning experience and we wish you the best of luck for future attempts.
Borneo Ultra Trails would like to thank all participants and everyone contributing to the success of the race. This includes our sponsors, volunteers and race officials manning the Aid Stations, our communication teams manning and guiding at check points, our medic teams assisting runners and keeping them safe over the course, and not least the local communities who have assisted greatly in both establishing the trails, providing invaluable assistance at the aid stations and letting us run through their back yards. Many people have worked tirelessly throughout the race for the success of the event, and it has been a joy and privilege to have everyone in the team.
