The Race Series

The Super Kerbau Trail Run Series 2016/2017 is a roaming trail running series that will take runners through jungle, village trails and back roads in selected parts of Sabah on the island of Borneo. The Super Kerbau courses are designed for beginners and experienced trail runners alike, with a combination of trails and hills providing ample challenge for a fun day out.

The members behind Borneo Ultra Trails Sdn Bhd have been organizing races in Sabah since 1998 and have a long, proud history of organizing some of the best races in Malaysia and South East Asia, including the legendary Sabah Adventure Challenge, TMBT Ultra Trail Marathon and the BUTM Ultra Trail Marathon which are big and tough but well managed races. The Super Kerbau race series is an ideal introductory to trail running to train for one of the longer courses of the bigger events.

The dates of the Super Kerbau Series of Races held and planned till date:

Race #1-Sunday, 18th September 2016, Kiulu, Tuaran District, Sabah
Race #2-Sunday, 11th December 2016, Pukak, Tuaran District, Sabah
Race #3-Sunday, 21st May, 2016, Tambunan, Sabah

With three race categories with distances in the order of 5-10 km, 15 km and 30 km, the race is designed to allow both beginners and experienced runners to take part and be challenged. Runners are advised to be medically fit and mentally prepared for the challenges ahead as runners are likely to be exposed to both hot, wet and muddy conditions, dependent on the weather on race day.

Race #3 (21st May, 2017)

The third event will move to the interior district of Tambunan, nestled within the Central Valley in the Crocker Range. The drive from Kota Kinabalu to Tambunan crosses the Crocker Range and takes about 1.5 hours.

The race will start and finish at the Tandarason Resort and Country Club (TRCC) along the Pegalan river a short distance outside of the township of Tambunan. TRCC offers various accommodation options ranging from camping over dormitories to a limited number of rooms and chalets.

Rather than an early morning drive from Kota Kinabalu to Tambunan on Sunday morning, participants may choose to take a weekend trip to Tambunan and stay at TRCC or some of the other accommodation options available in and around Tambunan for a relaxed Saturday together with other runners and a leisurely start on the race Sunday morning.

An optional barbeque lunch will be on offer Sunday afternoon after the race - open to friends and family who come to view the race. The cost is RM 30 per person and booking is required via email to This email address is being protected from spambots. Outline of race course:

All three races will start and finish at TRCC with the start at 7 am on Sunday, 21st of May, 2017. The shorter route has been extended from 5 km in the previous races to 9 km for the present race, but half of this distance is on relatively flat road with easy progress, and it is considered that anyone with a reasonable base fitness can complete this course. The cutoff time has been extended to ensure ample time to complete the course for those who prefer a leisurely pace. The mid distance has also been slightly extended from 15 to close to 17 km to fit the terrain. An outline of the courses is provided below followed by an overview map and elevation profiles:

~9 km with one major hill to conquer with a total ascent / descent of ~500 m
~17 km with 2 significant hills to overcome and a total ascent / descent of ~900 m
~30 km with three significant hills to climb and a total ascent / descent of ~1375

Cutoff times have been set to enable us to manage the course. These are generally very generous, but 30k participants do need to keep a steady pace to stay within the cutoff time and finish before dark. Cutoff times for the total race distances are:

 ~8 km:     4 hours
~15 km:    6 hours
~30 km:   11 hours
