The Borneo Ultra-Trail® Marathon & Trail Run is an extreme outdoor road and trail race that is designed for trail runners who understand the risks associated with participating in such an event. In particular:

Compulsory Equipment

The compulsory equipment list is established to ensure that competitors carry a minimum of equipment to cope with a variety of scenarios, including the eventuality of getting lost or injured on the race course and having to spend longer than anticipated time on the course. Whereas the vast majority of the 30 km runners for instance will not need a headlamp, we do always have a not insignificant number of 30k runners who do go into the dark, and a headlamp is therefore part of the compulsory equipment. For competitor equality, all competitors, irrespective of experience and competitive standing, must carry the compulsory equipment at all times during the race. For the 100 km competitors with a dropbag, this also means that no compulsory equipment can be left in the dropbag for the second half of the course.

Please note that the 12 items listed are separate items and one items cannot double up for another item. So a mobile phone for instance cannot replace a backup headlamp/torch (it would not provide sufficient light for safe progress and it would also drain the phone battery), and a backup headlamp with a blinker function cannot replace a blinker light.

Borneo Ultra Trails in line with standard practice of large international races have adopted a strict policy with no exceptions to the compulsory equipment. We will carry out both spots checks on the course and all top finishers in each category will undergo a full check at the finish line. Disqualifications and time penalties have been issued for both the BUTM and the TMBT in previous races and this has affected the podiums. We sincerely hope that all competitors will take the regulations seriously for this and future versions, and the stronger competitors on the day will be the overall winners.

The following compulsory equipment must be carried at all times during the race.

ü:   Compulsory to be brought along at all times              (ü):  Recommended for safety or comfort

1 Basic Medical Kit: For treating minor wounds and injuries and should contain some antiseptic, gauze, some self adhesive dressings and small elastic bandage (preferably the cohesive type). A blister kit is also recommended.

The needs of competitors vary with fitness and abilities. It is the responsibility of each competitor to assess his/her own abilities and requirements for a safe race. Below is a list of additional items beyond the compulsory equipment for consideration.
